4 sources of fat in the abdomen
So, I was at this thrift store by my house the other day and I saw this brand new looking book by Denise Austin about toning up your stomach.. I was all for it, man! I thought for as cheap as it was it was worth a read. I found it pretty interesting actually, about the different types of fat and how to combat it. The only thing I didn’t care for is that she kept calling it a ‘tummy’.. I don’t know about all of you but I haven’t called it a ‘tummy’ since I was about 6 and a half…
Here is some basics of what caught my attention..
*according to Denise Austin’s book Tone Your Tummy Type*
#1-Subcutaneous- This pinchable fat lies just beneath the skin. It’s the fat that you can see when someones stomach sways and jiggles. This type of fat does not tend to affect health as adversly as other types of fat.
#2-Visceral- This is deep fat packed around the internal organs and is not as noticeable as subcutaneous fat. Many relatively slender people have dangerous amounts of this fat and don’t know it! Visceral fat surrounds your liver. Due to it’s location, it more easily breaks down and releases fatty acids into the bloodstream- where they can clog your arteries and can cause other havoc than subcutaneous fat. Research shows that this fat breaks down and is resynthesized 4 to 5 times faster than fat in the other parts of body and abdomen.
#3- Liver Fat- Your liver stores fat and sugar for later use. As a result, when you are overweight, the cells inside your liver can start to fill up with fat, creating a “fatty liver”. If your fatty liver is caused by obesity- and not alcoholism- it usually does not lead to liver disease and usually can be revearsed with weightloss. If enought fat accumulates in the liver, liver disease can occur.
#4-Omentum Fat-Omentum is an organ that hangs beneath your stomach. It stores the excess fat calories from food. When your body stores calories in this pouch it has easy access to it. The more easily fat is mobilized, the more easily it can enter the bloodstream and end up in places where it shouldn’t, such as inside other body organs.
* Then she goes on to say that Japanese research shows that dieting shows to burn off only one type of ‘tummy fat’- the dangerous Visceral fat. Exercise on the other hand, tends to target the jiggly, more noticeable subcutaneous fat stored just beneath the skin.
